The Southwestern Lands: Phoenix Hot Spots
Phoenix and its greater outlying suburb areas have found itself in times of population boon. The city ranks 5th in population size among U.S. cities due to its arid climate and booming industry. The older generations seek a warm affordable area to rest and relax in their later retirement years. But for the visitors who are curious to see what the buzz is all about, this article will be a good starting point in seeking interesting points of attraction for vacationers and those who seek a longer extended stay in Phoenix resorts.
Getting the Grand View
For the hiker, there are quite a few trails that perimeter the city. The hike can lead you up along the valley walls to take in the sheer volume of the city and what it all encompasses. Since most of the surrounding area in the Phoenix valley is protected parkland it makes it easy on the eyes when its just blue skies and pitchforked Saguaro cacti extending into the distant Sonoran desert. The South Mountain park preserve is one such place where you can hike not far from the city center. Along the way you may find ancient petroglyphs etched into stones as a reminder of the ancient civilizations that once inhabited modern city.
Links
You would figure that a place that gets 326 days of no precipitation would have problems accommodating for such things as grass. Not so in Phoenix, where 200 golf courses speckle the urban landscape with lush greens and fairways thanks to certain water rights brought from the Colorado river and lake Mead. These greens often are paralleled by their Phoenix resort counterparts, which seem to go hand in hand. However, as a side note for the more environmentally conscious visitor, they would be happy to know that some of the courses are employing means of finding water from reclaimed water sources instead of the heavily used Colorado River waterway resource.
Water Sports
To make mention again of Lake Mead, this is one of the vacationing spots somewhat near the Phoenix area if you don't mind taking a little drive outside of the city. You'll find a glassy blue water oasis among the red rocks where a good deal of the lake is open for boating. For those who are into houseboating, the Gregg Basin section of the lake provides ample space and solitude to float in peace while on vacation.
Phoenix has a great deal of resources within the city itself. It's one of the biggest urban centers in the U.S. but at the same time the city life can quickly change within short jaunt outside its borders.
