Protect Your Bathroom From Mold And Mildew

The bathrooms in our home are some of the most often used rooms we have. They can also be some of the most unsanitary, even when we strive to keep them clean. Air fresheners will help with odor problems and there are so many different brands and scents to choose from. A bathroom that smalls good is a plus but it does not necessarily mean that it is clean.

Toilet sanitizers are wonderful to help with a toilet's cleanliness. You can get them in tablets or liquids and they hang or drop into the toilet tank. They will fill the bowl with deodorizer and sanitizer every time the toilet is flushed. These can not take the place of regular scrubbings, especially on the outside of the toilet, but they do help between cleanings.

One of the biggest concerns in any bathroom is the growth of mold and mildew. Exhaust fans help to tremendously cut down on moisture in a bathroom that can cause these problems. Mold can cause illness in humans and we need to do everything we can to ensure it does not take a hold anywhere in our house.

After showers is when there is often water left on the tub and walls around it. Some surfaces are not as susceptible to mold as others. Sheetrock, tile with grout, and wallpapered surfaces are good growing places for mold. Raw sheetrock that has only been painted and wallpaper should be avoided on the walls surrounding the tub and shower.

Tile with grout is alright to use, but it does have to be kept clean and as dry as possible when not in use. Wiping tiles down after a shower can help to reduce the risk of mold growth. The grout between tiles is where mold generally starts to grow because it is porous and will retain moisture. Using cleaning products with bleach added is one of the best molds preventatives.

If you have a dirty clothes hamper in your bathroom, do not put wet articles in it. This can cause mildew to grow if they are left in there long enough. Mildew is virtually impossible to remove from clothing. Bacteria must have water to continue to grow. Keep wet items out of the bathroom to avoid making an even bigger breeding ground for bacteria.

Make sure the members of your home use the exhaust fan when bathing or showering. The easiest solution for this is to have an exhaust fan that is directly connected to the light switch, this way when the light switch comes on, so does the exhaust fan. Light fixture and exhaust fan combinations are the best solution.
