What You Need to Know about Hearing Aids

Hearing aids, tiny amplification devices, are responsible for improving the lives of countless numbers of hearing loss sufferers. Hearing aids generally consist of tiny microphones and speakers packaged in a single device.

If a hearing aid is worn inside the outer ear then it is referred to as an 'In the Ear' device. These are more visible when worn than canal aids, but still often go unnoticed. These are worn by people with hearing loss ranging from mild cases to severe cases and are easier to insert and remove than canal aid devices. Telecoils can often be used with these kinds of devices and they tend to have the added benefit of a volume control.

Hearing aids known as 'behind-the-ear' aids consist of an earmold which is connected to a speaker that sits inside the outer ear. The earmold acts as the microphone and amplifier separate from the speaker. These types of hearing aids are the most visible but the separate speaker means that they can be effective for helping with very severe hearing problems. They can however have problems with high-pitched feedback.

Today, both digital and analog audio technologies are used in hearing aids. Analog and digital audio hearing aids both have their own pros and cons associated with them.

Analog audio technology hearing aids convert sound waves and to electrical signals and amplify them. an audiologist can program an analog device to fit the needs of the patient. Analog hearing aids can often be adjusted to suit the location and differing noise levels by the person who wears it.

Digital audio allows more flexibility when it comes to setting the device but is the more expensive technology. The sound reproduction associated with digital hearing aid devices tends to be much better than the analog ones. The devices can adapt to their environment and the sound levels adjust depending on the noise levels making them more comfortable and more convenient for the wearer.

The more modern devices have been proven to be more practical and comfortable, improving the lives of all of the people that wear them.
