Everyone is aware of the fact that fruits and veggies are excellent for the body, due to their abundance of fiber and disease-fighting nutrients. Your mother told you to eat your fruits and vegetables. The question is: have you been listening? Did you do as your mother said?

Think about it before you pull up to the drive-through window and order those greasy burgers and fries for lunch the next time. And even if you don't eat fast foods every day, are you actually preparing and eating nutritious foods at home, or are you in the habit of just grabbing the potato chip bag and a package of Oreos for a quick and convenient lunch?

How about grapes, watermelon, or a nice, juicy cantaloupe? Simply wash and slice and they are ready to go. Another choice could be carrots, celery or cauliflower marinated in Italian dressing. Research shows that we are simply not eating enough the greens and colors we need. They have created a movement to try and help remind the public to eat more fruits and veggies. 5 a day encourages us to get 5 fruits and vegetables into our diets daily.

In the beginning, five servings per day appears like a lot. There are some simple and practical ways to begin sneaking fruits and vegetables into your diet. Want to start now? Add some fruit to your breakfast choices. Add fruit to your breakfast. It is delicious on pancakes, waffles or cereal. Then carry an orange, banana, or apple with you for your snack at break time.

Is it vegetables that you're having a hard time increasing? No problem. A tossed salad with a variety of chopped and sliced vegetables is a great idea. When you choose a sandwich for a meal, be sure to pile on the veggies. If you're baking, you can sneak in vegetables and never even realize it. If you're making a sauce or a soup, you can load up on vegetables. Cook up a batch of stew, and lay on the vegetables.

Celery or apples with peanut butter on top makes a great snack and it is very kid friendly. For your kids, who have a natural aversion to healthy foods, try them on different types of fruits and vegetables fixed in various ways - they're bound to like some of them. A lot of well meaning parents will tell their children that they must first clean their plate of vegetables before they can even think about dessert. The problem here is the psychology this creates. You're basically communicating the idea that vegetables are something unpleasant to 'get through' so you can move onto the sweet stuff in live. What if instead we flipped the script?

How about some broccoli after that chocolate cake? Drinking juices are another way people can consume more daily fruits and vegetables. The single problem with fruit juices is the lack of fiber in them. The kids have a tendency to fill up on juice, resulting in their not eating their food. But they have more calories, too.

There are numerous benefits to your health when you eat the recommended servings of fruits and vegetables. It's getting harder and harder to pretend you don't know about them. If you are getting your 5 servings every day you have half the chance of contracting several types of cancer than people who are only getting about 2 servings each day. Consuming additional veggies and fruits also cuts their odds of suffering blindness, cardiac arrest, or stroke as an adult.

Everyone knows what they should do. We all know how to eat. We just rationalize eating what we want instead. Some people claim fruit takes too long to slice on their cereal and besides, vegetables and fruits are expensive to keep in stock at home. And then there's the old favorite - 'Just when I was ready to eat that peach, I saw it had already gone bad.'
