Jobs in medicine have long been desired by youthful people who want to make a difference. This is true now more than ever as the medical schools are sending forth a new breed of doctors who have abandoned the material aspects of medicine, choosing instead to labor for the public good.

Medical schools, pharmaceutical companies and medical insurance companies still offer large salaries to qualified individuals but many of today's graduates will turn down these jobs for lower paying positions. Alternatively, this physician ears a $12,000 annual sum from his own organization that he founded while still attending medical school. Delivering good medical service to Americans with improved conditions, this doctor and others are a new breed that are dedicated to their fellow man.

He says he isn't interested in practicing medicine in the traditional way. Serving specific neighborhoods, with legal, educational, dental and medical services, his organization is funded by the U.S. government to study how to deliver these needs to the people. He says that the needs of the entire community must be taken into consideration in order to accurately evaluate health care problems. The difficulty is that there are too few available opportunities for current students who want to make changes within the system.

The condition of health care in this nation is in dire straits. The response of medical schools is coming, but it has been slow. Those wearing the spurs in this situation are the medical students themselves and resultant from this, almost all of the country's medical schools now have courses in community medicine as part of their class offerings. There is a growing awareness on the part of modern medical students of the lack of basic medical care available to many individuals and their families.

According to the dean of one of the top medical schools in the country, today's students have a stronger sense of social awareness, a genuine spirit of compassion, seriousness of purpose, and deep-rooted concern for injustices. The dean also stated that this is the first generation of physicians where he has seen these qualities, and that it can affect what they find funny as well. The dean notes that the time and effort put in to attaining their objective by the medical students of today is much greater than students previously. They want to live differently than their predecessors, and their goals and beliefs reflect that attitude. Today's student is very sensitive to his not being caught in social regimentation.

The doctors of past generations were always worried about their social status. These doctors were part of an elitist social group that loved to have fun, enjoyed material wealth, and arranged their lives to be safe, secure, comfortable, and successful. Present day students do not see eye to eye with their former generation's counterparts.

Students today are a part of an emerging age of community medicine where the focus is on providing quality medical care for the entire population of the community, meeting individual's health needs regardless of the financial compensation. One forerunner associate professor in the efforts to revolutionize the medical schools has proclaimed that America spends billions of dollars for its medical care, but the services and workers provided will most likely not improve for a while. Not only have improvements not been realized, but in the absence of changes, conditions in the health care industry are likely to deteriorate.

Encouraging medical students to seek careers in preventive medicine, and public and environmental health, is a task that has been taken on by one organization. A country-wide effort is underway which offers community services and care that is sponsored by this group. It spends a lot of its time trying to get medical programs to have students participate in some of these projects.

In keeping with this trend, many medical school students will graduate and choose to return to the areas serviced through these projects and establish their own medical practices. Other than establishing public health clinics and projects in under-served locations, a lot of hospitals and medical training programs are also looking to educate physicians who are members of minority groups.
