Nothing Can Stop This Lady from Pursuing her Medical Career
A lady doctor recalls that she took some time out for the odd party even when she attained her ambition through a roundabout route and as a tribute to an unswerving purpose in life. But she was never fixated on just one goal, especially when she was back in high school. Back then in her local high school, she was attracted to both a medical and linguistic career path. So she decided to conquer it all French, Spanish, English and all the sciences as well! A Spanish professor helped this lady, whose prowess is communication, make her final decision. The teacher responded by saying that while she can be a doctor who happens to be a language expert, she cannot be a physician on the side.
She was greeted by nothing but science subjects as her A-level studies when she went to the local community college. She found the results to be discouraging after two years but this did not stop her. She passed only chemistry, which was her favorite subject.
She entered the university through the back door of Natural Sciences with the intention of transferring to medicine on her second year. While she did have a lot of good times, she did not perform well so transferring would be hard. Instead of A's, her grades were mostly B's. She adamantly vowed to complete this degree thanks to her growing love for chemistry as well as this reason.
Her love for Chemistry allowed her to major in chemistry and food technology. Her honors degree arrived in the field. There was not a single job out there for her right after she graduated. There was simply no work for her the first year she was out of university. Jobs seemed to be out of existence. She sought even the food industry for a job. Discouragement enables her to ask why she got into this in the first place.
The lone individual that was able to offer her a decent job was a drug dealer who learned about her proficient way of handling industrial kettles and decided to offer her some money. But she recalls that she did not get tempted even if the offer was quite a huge sum of money and when she turned it down she also made it clear that she was taught by her parents that money is not everything. She kept applying to medical school and never giving up on her physician dreams. As she waited to hear something from medical school, she accepted a teaching job with fear.
A year later, she learned that if she'd ever get word of acceptance from med school she would need more money and this enabled her to leave her job as a teacher and joined a commercial bank to become a trainee manager. She remembered weighing the pros and cons and even conversed with people and the consensus came that she would be a mere employee in the end if she opted to stick it out with the bank. Only medicine can offer her a business of her own while she toils on what she loves.
After two years, she got into medical school. Year one led her to a mixture of fun and learning as how it traditionally goes. She simply flung herself into it. She was able to party hard and was never a book worm but managed to keep her grades up. During year one she was in top 10 per cent in Physiology and bagged community health honors. Community medicine fascinated her as it made her feel connected to the people. You get to know how the lives of your patients went as you enter the homes. It was an exceptional program.
She thought that she would get revolted when time comes that she cuts up cadavers but she wouldn't be emotional. But then pathology was different. When they were required to autopsy newly dead people, she would cry for over 10 weeks. Emotional loss inside her was triggered by the deaths. Her love for pharmacology follows her strong background in chemistry. How chemicals worked in the body especially in curing diseases was something that mesmerized her. She would visit the library for some journals and this was not her habit. All she knew and knew her were shocked as she took home an award in Pharmacology.
She shied away from being a bookworm and gained the reputation of a party organizer along with five other study mates. Three of them got honors for they all did well during their finals. A group member she mentored got a medal in gynecology and honors in other fields. Now, we can confidently say that we never wasted our time.
